Tanzania works year-round, but the strongest month for Serengeti wildlife may not be the strongest month for a quiet Zanzibar beach or a high-altitude climb.
Dry, green and shoulder seasons
June through October is generally drier across much of the safari circuit. Wildlife often gathers around persistent water, vegetation is easier to see through and road conditions are more predictable. It is also a popular, higher-demand period.
The greener months bring newborn animals in some ecosystems, migratory birds, dramatic clouds and fewer vehicles. Long-rain timing varies, so flexibility and lodge access matter more than a simple weather icon.
- Choose by ecosystem, not country-wide averages
- Expect premium demand in July, August and festive periods
- Carry rain protection in every season
Match the month to the experience
Ndutu and the southern Serengeti ecosystem are often a focus from roughly January into March, while northern Serengeti becomes relevant later in the dry season. These are natural movements driven by rainfall, not fixed appointments.
Kilimanjaro’s popular windows are January to early March and June to October. Zanzibar’s coast is warm year-round, with sea, wind and rainfall patterns influencing snorkeling, diving and kitesurfing.
- Build several nights into migration-focused regions
- Use longer climbing routes regardless of season
- Check tides as well as weather for Zanzibar
How to choose your dates
Start with the experience that is least flexible: school holidays, a specific migration region, a summit attempt or a special event. Then place supporting destinations around it.
If price and space matter more than one famous wildlife scene, shoulder periods can be excellent. A good planner explains tradeoffs rather than pretending every month offers the same thing.
- Share flexible dates when possible
- Book high-demand camps early
- Keep expectations wildlife-realistic
Start with the moment you most want to experience
Choose dates around a real priority: newborn calves on the southern plains, drier-season game viewing, quieter parks, clear mountain mornings or warm coastal water. Then shape the rest of the journey around that anchor. Tanzania’s regions do not share one identical weather pattern, so a thoughtful itinerary uses flight times, road conditions and the character of each season instead of chasing a single “perfect” month.
